I have searched but cannot find any in my collection. I remember it well though and used to stand to watch the ventilation fan running, it was saucer shaped and stood vertically on end. It was smothered in a black tar like substance and smelt awful. After being closed and flooded for many years the Government decided to empty about 760 tons of Mustard Gas down the upcast shaft in two stages, I was there watching and asked if I could have one of the thick huge wooden boxes that now empty were being burnt but they said it could kill me as they were all contaminated with the chemical. They laid steel girders over the shaft and put a concrete cap over it and old George kept pigs in the airlock and the newly capped shaft area. Years later down Cotes Park East Main I was ganging sixes tail gate when the water from Shady pit burst through and although we all stopped down the pit taking pumps inbye we lost the battle to save the district and a new higher pit bottom was made at the yard coal level, the main sump pumps were moved to this level letting the Black Shale, the East Main flood, plus all the yard coal down to the Alfreton Boundary. Ones and Twos under Wyclife Road Alfreton also flooded but had been exhausted anyway by this time.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
