I've been gradually mapping the ironstone tramway/railways of Northamptonshire, the books of the late Eric Tonks & local knowledge have helped a lot, but can anyone on the forum help & add to my knowledge?

I can supply a GE overlay to anyone that would like to help, but would strip out mine locations.

It's a huge project & I think I'm going to have to do several overlays for different periods.

Thanks for reading.

Have you anything from the Thrapston District Historical Society?
I have a publication called 'Ironmaking at Islip with reference to its associated quarries, mines, narrow gauge railways and chemistry for example. (It is dated 1996, by Frank Edmonds).

Have you been to the Northamptonshire Record Office? They have a huge amount of historical information on the mining/quarrying operations in that area. I recognised quite a few of the documents there as being major sources for the Tonks books.

Another thing you may find useful is the download version of Google Earth as you can select ariel photography from a number of different eras. Fortunately for the Islip area it goes all the way back to the 1940's.

There's also the Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust.

What kind of help are you looking for?

I haven't managed to get to the record office yet, but a visit to there & the National Archives is planned.

I've been using Google Earth to plot everything & my kmz file is quite big at the moment.

I was looking for help finding all the old lines as some of them don't appear on any maps, although using books & looking carefully at crop marks does find some locations.

If you go to my website for Irthlingborough Ironore mine at www.apack1.co.uk - History/Chapter three and scroll halfway down you will see a map of the standard gauge track put in during WWII by the Min. of Supply. There are also maps of the 3ft. gauge track on the bank at Irthlingborough & the track from the mine to LNWR Peterborough to Northampton line. - Good hunting

Interesting stuff. Will read it thoroughly.
