back in the 1960's the entrance to these mines were open and unprotected. With a mate I went down to the bottom of the steeply descending shafts. there were i think five entrances with supporting limestone pillars seperating them at alternate intervals, so that from the bottom looking up to the surface light one had the feeling of looking along the aisles of a church tilted at a crazy angle. At the bottom to the right was a small canal which dissapeared each end into a low tunnel; all very stygian. this canal was of course used for extraction of the limestone and connected to the Dudley Canal at the bumble hole. Ascending the shaft we dislodged a lot of stone. It was a bit dangerous. I guess that's why access has been closed .
