A query received via email - can anyone cast any light please?

Of particular interest is a James Woodhouse who in the 1841 & ’51 Census was described as a ’Boatman’, and 1861 as a Granite worker, I have a birth year of 1811/12.

Any information you can give would be of great interest.

Mountsorrel granite was carried by water - the nearby Grand Union Canal Leicester section - and the company appears to have had its own boats. Later it had rail connections from the Midland and the Great Central - the former line is now a conveyor and the latter is partly restored by the GC heritage line. The recent operator was Redland but is now Lafarge.
