As a youth I recall trying to measure the depth of the shaft with a plump bob and reel of string, it had a foot square hole in the middle of the capping in those days ( 33 years ago ), I never did reach the bottom ran out of string, I can't recall an adit though below the shaft,although the photo looks as if the portal was built fairly recent, is it located near the pond that was below the shaft? There used to be another shaft right at the bottom of the wood near Golden Valley end but this was always flooded to the collar, it had a 6 foot circular brick wall around it, I'm not sure if this was connected with No 9 pit or it was a separate working.
