My Gr Gr Grandfather Samuel Flint of Steeplegrange was the first Wharfinger employed on the Cromford & High Peak Railway in 1833 at Middle Peak Wharf He was formerly an Overseer at Ratchwood Lead Mine Rise End Middleton where previous member of the Flint family had been Agents He was also Station Master at Steeplegrange when for a time a primitive passenger service was run on the line to Friden passengers having to alight and walk up to the top of each inclined plane before re boarding
He lived first at Middle Peak Wharf and then at Steeplegrange Station Masters House now near Steeplegrange Light Railway which runs on the Killer Branch Killer's being of my family who owned Hopton Wood Stone Quarry (Killer Bros) Samuel Flint married Mary Killer she sister of William Killer who first founded the Quarry his sons Adam Joseph William and john being the Killer Bros.
Adam Killer being Managing Director married into my Spencer family ...William Killer the founder my 3Xuncle married twice his 1st wife being Mary Willans of near Cheadle
whose daughter Anne Willans Killer married my wifes kinsman Timothy Fox of Willersley Lane Cromford he cousin to my wifes Gr Gr Grandfather George Fox also vorn at Willersley Lane Cromford and when Mary Killer nee Willans obt William married Annah Brownson dau of my Gr Gr Uncle and Aunt John and Elizabeth Brownson nee Walker
John Brownson being a direct heir of Majoir Johannes Conraft Molinus who with Sir Cornelius Vermuyden oversaaw the driving of The Dovegange Sough in the early 1600s
William and Anna's son Samuel Thomas Killer also married into my wifes and my own family of Mathers Evans and Brookes.
Samuel Flint's son Helint who started out in his teens as a lead miner at The Bage Mine Bolehill 1850s by his marriage to Emily Crofts of Cromford in 1859 was Wharfinger at Friden Wharf and Station Master by the 1880s at Parsley Hay Station My Grandfather William Flint was born at Friden Station House (now part of the Brick Works) in 1862 who married Gwenillian Sprake of Blaenafon South Wales in 1886 she dau of Edwin Sprake a Manager at Blaenafon Iron & Steel Works.

S J Sheldon was Deputy Barmaster Soke & Wapentake of Wirksworth 188- and Barmaster Crich Liberty 1877-
I have his private papers and Ledgers and some of his personal Barmaster Books in my possession which has much information of how as the lead Mines lost their trade he had the responsibility of transfering ownernship or winding down ownership
S J Sheldon also owned many more Lead mines
He was also into his late 70s General Manager at Bradley Mineral Works Middleton Top which comprised the quarry opposite Middleton Top Engine House and a Lead Mine near Intake Quarry I have his original will
He sold the Freehold and Mineral rights of Golconda Chariot Chance and Tenement Mines to George Henry Key Colour Merchant of Cromford The site today is known as Viaton Industries and to my knowledge the Keys still have input into the firm
My Grandfather William Flint was killed at Killer Bros Quarry DEc 5th 1905 he being a Shunter Driver and Steam Crane Driver under the face ..IN the process of chaining out a wedge of Block Stone (Killers hardley ever used explosives as their product was used in the building and monumental trade ) the face collapsed burying crane and man under tons of stone and dust (see Mines and Quarries Inspectorate Report 1906 ) My Uncle John Samuel Flint started out as a Fireman on the C & HPR 1920s he then removing to Buxton and then Crewe as a Steam Engine Driver main line..

John Shaw who was grt nephew of my 4XGrandmother Anne Shaw who married Isaac Hoades..co founded Bowne & Shaws Quarry Middle Peak, with Peter Bowne who was already General Manager at the Butterley Company Quarry Crich Johns father John Shaw nephew of my 4XGrandmother was the founder of the Shaw dynasty of quarry owners John 1st married Dorothy Alsop dau of Dennis Alsop Farmer of Bow Wood near Lea Bridge Dorothy's sister Anne married Joshua Street they my wifes 5XUncle and Aunt John 2nd married Hannah Wilde whose father John wilde was a Malster and Lime Burner on land at Middle Peak where my Wheatcroft family co owned lead mines ..John Wildes son John brother of hannah wne tinto partnership with Shaw and Bowne William Green Goodwin of Wigwell Grange Civl Engineer financing the project..
By the time John seniors sons took ovet the firm they had bought out all the other partners One of the son married back into my family (William Shaw) My "Aunt" Ada Shaw lived on Oakerthorpe Road Bolehill actually she was my Grandmother Walker nee Cauldwells cousin..
The Shaws were also of my wifes Grand fore bares You will realise by now that my wife and i are distantly related before marriage by many permutations be it quite legally so..due mainly to our families tending to live and work as Lead Miners over many generations in the same vicinity and at the same Mines ie my Shaw family originate from Beeley then to Oker and Snitterton.
Jethro Shaw my wife and my Grand fore bare was a partner at Upper Dalesfield mine above Oker and had interests in Tearsall Mine Bonsall Moor .
Shaws used Middle Peak Wharf and the C & HPR to get their stone to the main line as did my Birley family who owned a monumental Quarry on Middleton Moor just above Killer Bros Quarry ..Birleys had a tramway from their quarry which joned up with Sheldons at Middleton Top Loading Bay Up to recent years the wooden tub wagons were still to be seen on the raised banking on the other side of the wall seperating the quarry form Middleton top sidings
