I was working in Stoke area today so did Foxfield Colliery in the drizzle. I turned up and yet again thru sheer luck met someone who let me lose on the site on my tod 😉 . The last time I went there was on the train and the place was a wreck, but now what a change. 🙂 The main headgear has been nicely repointed, painted and conserved, and the shaft head building below and part of the headgear is being restored fully, windows the lot and work is going on to the shaft collar to make that presentable. The site has been tidied up but not ruined and significant work has been done on the Foxfield railway sidings to with evidence of a new shed of some sort being built, as well as station platforms.
The small headgear is still in need of some TLC but appears reasonably stable and the place still feels like a colliery with plenty to see.
They seem to have aquired a winding engine which was in bits around the site but was all there.
The old screens, baths, workshops and offices are still there but on a private part of the site but all seem in nice condition.
A nice touch was that the memorial to the dead of the mine from the Great War was well maintained and a wreath was there. 🙂
all in all a nice trip in a quiet corner of Staffs.
