I've had an email from somebody researching an accident at Silverhill Colliery in which his father died on the 26/02/1960.

Is anybody aware of this accident, or have any details or suggestions of where to look more information. The chap in question has already tried UK Coal, National Coal Museum, National Archives and Mansfield local paper archives. I've had a look on the DMM accident list, but can't find this one mentioned.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Has he tried the Mines Inspectorate? I thought that they always got informed when there's been a serious accident or fatality at a mine. I'll also try asking amongst my colleagues in PDMHS, although the Nottinghamshire coalfield isn't really on our patch, we do have ex-colliers and people interested in coal mining in the membership who may know of other sources to try.

Thanks AR, if you can find any information from the PDMHS that would be great. In the mean time I'll suggest the Mines Inspectorate to him.

The police should have investigated it initially to rule out any suspicion and hopefully conclude it as an industrial accident. The file would then be passed to the relevant body, nowadays that would be the health and safety exec.

Bit of a long shot, but if this chap is struggling it might be another avenue of investigation for him.

I think DMM only list accidents were more than 5 people died.
Coal Authority are unlikely to have any info.
There are a few coal mining forums eg http://www.terryblythe.co.uk/index.html
You could try miners unions or even insurance companies

I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

I live not that far from Silverhill and i cant believe that there's not info this accident , we had a chap killed the other month and it was all over the local paper . Has he tried the pocal paper ( Chad ) in Mansfield or Sutton Library ?

funny we're talking about coal mining, today my grandfather found a book from 1910 called 'First steps in coal mining' by Alexander Forbes, a good read = it has some great diagrams and some pics...
