Hello all,
I am new to this resource and very happy to find so many people interested in our heritage. I would also like to see if I can trace any records relating to my Grandfathers employment at the Hey Royds Mine near Skelmanthorpe England. Would love to visit it one day.

Hi there, you should be able to use the search function to find details of the mine, which is listed on the site.
Note that you'll need to use the correct spelling, which is : Hay Royds Colliery.
The mine closed down a few years ago, due to geological problems, hope this helps.

You have probably come across it already, but "Last of the Day Hole Miners" by John Senior is great reference for the area. It covers the history of Hay Royds and would give you an idea of what was happening when your grandfather was employed there.

I can't speak for him, but RogerL on this site is usually a good source of info for the area.

Maybe someone with better knowledge than me on here could say what the requirements for the archiving of employment records for a private mine working under licence would have been? At least I think that's how Hay Royds was worked.

If there were no requirements, then maybe records would still be with the owners or in local council archives.

David Flack who used to own the mine is still around and active. He is looking into the Norcroft Mining disaster at the moment with a group.

Well close but not quite the same my R is for Richard. Still there must be something in the Morton genes that attracts is to underground work
