Hi - I am undertaking a project at the moment using GIS, and was wondering if anyone knew how to export the lat/long data of mines onto an excel csv file?

Yes, I’m trying to open the location of coal mines in QGIS through exporting lat and long data. I need this for the South Wales region (Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda, Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan). I know each site has a lat and long specified but was wondering if there was a quicker way than copying all of them out?

I think the forum owner is the only person who could answer your question, certainly with regard to any technical, ownership or copyright issues.

The mine locations have been added by individual members, and I suspect most were entered using a six figure National Grid Reference. I've certainly never used latitude/longitude directly. My uninformed guess is that the latitude/longitude displayed in the database entry will refer to a point on one corner of the 100m square covered by the 6 figure NGR.

As you only want coal mines have you looked at the metadata held by the Coal Authority?

It is for an academic project - part of my degree. It won't be published. I have been in touch with the Coal Authority but was just wondering if you had available data. No problem though. Thanks for your help

The Coal Authority are who you want. They have shapefiles of all coal workings in the UK that are much more spatially accurate than the user locations on here.
