Unfortunately for several reasons i have not managed to complete my searches for day levels in the Dunfermline area.
However, i have just returned from a holiday in Brora, Sutherland.
Here they had the most northerly coal mine up until about 1973 when it was closed and demolished. For many years prior to the opening of Brora mine there had been several "Bell" pits worked around this area. They were very dangerous places with a verticle shaft leading down to excavations at the bottom in the shape of a bell. No roof supports and the coal was lifted by a rope on a tripod at the shaft head. Most of this coal was used to power the nearby salt pans.
At one time this place was a hive of industry, with the coal pit, brickwork, salt pans, distillery, brewery, railway and a woolen mill.
Very sadly only the distillery still exists today.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
