Hello, I am sorry if this has been put in the wrong forum, but I am trying to piece together family history.

I live in Australia, and have inherited from my grandmother many years ago a massive silver serving tray which was given to her mother on the day of her wedding.

The help I need is my great grandmother was from Wales, and I was told that her family owned?? coal mines??. The inscription on the tray reads "Miss Jessie Roberts on her marriage 23rd August 1905 by employees at East Halkyn New N.H. Mines and Rhosesmor Friends.

My great grandmother married a Cecil Jones and they immigrated to Australia with my grandmother around 1911. I was told Cecil's familys snuff business went broke with the introduction of tobacco/cigarettes.

I am interested to find if anyone can point me in the right direction to find more history and if there would be distant relations still in Wales, as my daughters are visiting Wales in March.

I appreciate if any assistance can be given to me.

The Flintshire records office at Harwarden holds a lot of information on lead mining in North Wales.

There is an online pdf with a list of titles which includes stuff on East Halkyn:

http://www.flintshire.gov.uk/en/PDFFiles/Records-and-Archives/Index-to-Lead-Mining-Records-at-Flintshire-Record-Office.pdf

They probably have a research service which could find out a bit more information for you, but this would be chargeable.

There are contact details on the website:

details of the management etc for these companies (East Halkyn & New North Halkyn) can be found online in Skinners Mining 1911 & list of Mines 1908 which can both be googled easily.

Hi, as has been mentioned in this thread the Halkyn mines were lead mines so far as I am aware.

Cecil Jones is listed in the 1911 census as a tobacco manufacture in Chester, Cheshire, he was born in Cheshire.

His wife Jessie gives her place of birth as Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

So far as I can make out Jessie was one of the children of William Morris Roberts and Catherine Williams Pierce, William Morris Roberts was a commercial traveler in the 1901 census,
In the 1911 census he appears to be listed as a lead mine director, all this will need verifying of course.

Hope this may be of some use.

Lozz.

Just hoping that before too long we'll be able to get back in these mines for a look-see again.

Anyone from GCC like to comment on progress with the owners?

"New NH" refers not to North Hendre, but to New North Halkyn.

The companies that are listed in the annual governmental List of Mines as owning these mines at this time are:

East Halkyn Mining Co Ltd: listed as owning East Halkyn Mine from 1891 to 1910, and listed as owning Rhosesmor Mine from 1900 to 1913. On the basis of a quick check in the online catalogue, I couldnot see a file for this company in the BT class in the National Archives.

New North Halkyn Mining Co Ltd: listed as owning New Halkyn Mine (previously known as North Halkyn Mine) from 1904 to 1909. The National Archives holds a file on this company (ref. TNA BT 31/35999/81891), such files usually include lists of directors and sometimes lists of shareholders. This file commences with the initial registration of the company in 1904 and ends with the dissolution of the company in 1953 (many companies experienced a lengthy inactive existence between the ending of on-the-ground operations and final, legal, dissolution).

The London Gazette online search facility revealed that both companies entered voluntary liquidation on the same day in 1930 and that the liquidators (Chester solicitors) were the same men. This suggests that the two companies were closely connected.

The List of Mines names only the mine managers or mine agents, not all managerial staff, and does not name directors. In this period the List of Mines names Edward Powell as agent at East Halkyn and also at Rhosesmor, and names Edward Harper as agent at New North Halkyn.

Both the East Halkyn & New North Halkyn Cos were Stock Exchange Listed, so should have returns including directors in the Stock Exchange Yearbooks. The nearest run of these to us down here I understand is held in Bristol Library.
This should also mean that in theory at least annual reports, prospectuses etc should be held in the Stock Exchange Library (at the Guildhall London).

Hello Amanda

I note that some time has elapsed since you posted on this site but I happened upon your message whilst researching my own family. It seems we are related. Your great grandmother Jessie was my grandmother's sister. You will have probably looked at the UK census records but Jessie (born 1878) appears first on the 1881 census when the family lived on Claremont Bank in Shrewsbury. By 1901 the family are in Hoole, Chester. Oddly my grandmother Jane (born 1886) doesn't appear until the 1911 census by which time the family have moved elsewhere in Hoole. My grandmother became a nurse & married AE Williams a doctor living in Hoole. They later moved along the coast to Prestatyn. After my grandfather died Jane moved to Colwyn Bay where my father was deputy Town Clerk. I remember her as a lovely kind old lady with a great sense of humour. Very devout but not in a preachy or disapproving way.

Coincidently, my mother's brother emigrated to Australia and lived in Melbourne.

Kind regards

Richard Williams
