Hi all,
I just found this website and thought I would sign up. I have explored some slate mines around the Blaenau area in Wales, but I am based in Oxford where there aren't a lot of mines. I have an interest in both exploration and mining history. Does anyone know of any explorable mines in the Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire areas?
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,
Just stumbled across your message and thought I'd drop you a line to say Hi. I too live in Oxford and have been exploring mines for a few years, on and off. There are a few areas that I know of locally but nothing of real interest. Stonesfield slate mines have a couple of adits that are blocked a little way in- they might be worth a look. There is a stone mine on the A40 towards Cheltenham- I think it's called Windrush mine. That is inaccessible as the portal is very well secured.
Do stay in touch and let me know if you find any in the midlands area.
Speak soon.

Hi there

There are a few stone mines in the Cotswolds although some of them need permission to visit. Ditto the iron mines in the Forest of Dean for which you need insurance and a permit if you aren't a member of a few local clubs. You're not a million miles away from the stone mines near Bath either.

I'm not too sure about the stuff in the Midlands though I'm sure someone here will be able to enlighten you.

Windrush Ay?? yeah been and looked at that, not much to see in reality, the abandoned hotel just back up the A40 is better along with the abandoned airfield a mile or so up the road on the opposite side PLENTY of interesting things to see there!

You'd be better off popping over to the bathstone quarries if you fancy a long walk underground, or failing that give me a shout (I'm in Mendip) and we can sort out summat down here as there's quite a few of T'owd Man's 'Oles to play with!
Better to regret something you have done - than to regret something you have not done.

Hi,
I was at stonesfield on Sunday but I couldn't find any of the adits. Also, does anyone know anything about the shafts in that area

Apart from that it looks like the Wiltshire stone mines are my best bet

Anyway, thanks for all the responses
Ben
