Yes a copy of the sketch would be nice.... How do you mean it leans to the Portland side? Yes they still meet onm a Thursday :)

Just another incidental fact, it is fairly well recorded that Fish bellied edge rail/plates were used but we have two types of stone sleeper blocks/setts, the two hole type with the rectangilar wear mark are for chaired type plates, the single hole type are non chaired, ie the rail/plate is bolted direct to sleeper block/sett.

Again thanks for the map but it still leans toward the Portland branch.

The Portland line came first although had later alterations and branches. The Mexboro line 'joined' on to this line, but I have seen a reference somewhere to the incline at Jacksdale being a Butterley Company one. I thought I had put together a map of my visible findings along the routes in the area - it's probably lost somewhere in a series of emails. I think I've put my photos for the Portland Tramway route on my Flickr page which you should be able to search for.

Did the bottom of the tramway/railway stop going to the canal wharf (or when) and go to the railway and or across the river?

Hi. Not sure where the tramway ended. Its a bit murky. Some say the canal basin and wharf and some other now beleive it went over the Cromford canal to the Butterley works and forge.
I have not yet seen the evidence for this. That does not mean its not extant, just i aint seen it!

ICLOK I cant do a scan but i can photo copy and let you have one. I think we may have a mutual aquaintance, who i will talk to tonight and try to get a copy to you.

Why would you build a railway to a wharf to save a few quid ..... The original line would cost a lot of money to build, certainly more than would be justified to save an extra few miles of canal travel from pinxton to ironville In order to get coal to the Trent. I think the Portland railway of 1825 went to codnor park works and the wharf is incidental thus giving Butterley the chance to load barges if required.

I've got another spanner to put in to the works.

There is a map showing a number of tramways/railways in the area and on it there is a line from Jacksdale Wharf heading to some pits (ironstone and coal) between Pye Hill and Alfreton Road. The line is not the main railway and it is not shown on the old OS maps (from 1881 onwards).

Thus, this gives a second line on the Selston side of the canal going to the wharf and or the iron works!!!

The 1835 Sandersons Map does show a crossing point between the Jacksdale and the iron works, however it does not label the wharf.

Could this be to James Oakes?
