Hi Mike, up that neck of the woods they'd most likely either be small coal mines or stone mines. There are underground workings in the quarries at Chinley and I think there are a few other bits and bats around the Glossop area, I'm not aware of any metal mines round there though.
Follow the horses, Johnny my laddie, follow the horses canny lad-oh!

Welcome along Mike,
I'm only down the road in Ashton,
There were some shafts just below Mottram church in the fields towards glossop, according to my mates dad who grew up in Mottram.Plenty more towards Denton and Rocher valley heading up towards Oldham near to "Smokies" night club. Also the Manganese workings up on Cracken edge near to Chinley(not much to see,but interesting non the less.

We do a fair amount of mooching in Derbyshire and when we get chance Wales (just back from a week spent wandering round the gold mines near to Dolgellau)
Some info here

There is apparantly just a hollow left of the shaft behind Mottram church (not far from the plaque recording the air crash that took place there(thats another of my hobbies,WWII aircraft crash sites)

As for evidence that's still there ...have a google for "Fairbottom bobs" or have a shufty on here for "rocher vale"

Some interesting stuff into the peak district that's not too far away from you 😎 😎
