I visited the mine yesterday, 05 06 2010, for the first time. There appears to be little information regarding this mine.
For anyone interested in visiting the mine, I think it's well worth the climb from Buckden. The first 20 metres or so is a little wet n boggy reaching mid calf but after that is surprisingly dry, at worst ankle deep and generally good underfoot. I am of average height and could walk normally in most cases, only needing to bow my head every now and again, a helmet is adviseable as I still managed a few knocks along the way. The main corridor seems to go for a few hundred meteres with branches dispersed on both sides at the same level. There appears to be lower and higher levels via holes and shafts which I did not explore but wouold like to. The whole structure has been dug out of solid rock and seems sound with a clean floor. There would appear to be the remains of a rail track with many sleepers in place but no rails remain, the sleepers can be slippy so walk between them. Some side passages have been walled up and the ends of some of the tunnels seem to be blocked by collapse, natural or deliberate I couldn't say. Apart from an old saw next to a pair of modern work gloves there's nothing much to see and one tunnel is very much the same as the rest. I'm new to caving and mine exploration so I enjoyed it. It probably won't hold much interest for the experienced but because of its easy access and navigation is good as an intro for new folk such as myself. On my next visit I will take a compass and pacer and try mapping it.

Theres information on Buckden Gavel in British Mining No 49. The Wharfedale Mines including an extensive survey from the early 1970s (Mike Moore has it new and second hand)

The survey doesn't really convey the three-dimemsional nature of the mine so theres a lot more to see in those lower and higher levels you mention.

There is a fantastic 3D model of the place made out of what appears to be matchsticks in the Earby Lead Mine Museum near Colne. Plus a few articles of Buckden Bill's clothing. Well worth a visit. www.yorkshiredalesminingmuseum.com Tel 01282 841422. Email [email protected]
