The NLS online map viewer for 25 inch England and Wales series has now extended from the South East to cover the area right down to Cornwall. Just looked at DGC - gobsmacking detail!

I wonder why there appears to be a hole in Dartmoor? (no not that[i] type of hole, I know there are plenty of quarries in that area but I do not recall any being that big!

The NLS collection is not entirely complete. It may simply be that they have no copies to scan. There are several examples where particular revisions are marked on the site as not being in the collection, whereas other revisions are available.

The OS may have decided not to do 25" maps of the area; I know moorland areas like Kinder Scout weren't included in the second edition of the Derbyshire mapping.

as a general rule, moorland areas were not that often included on the 25" survey and never on the 50"

seem to recall reading somewhere that if there was a single dwelling with access road/track, that would fall within a grid square at 25" then it would be mapped. otherwise not

I used to be able to overlay them on GE but the method I used doesn't work any more.

Their georeferencing isn't always accurate anyway. Mine was because I knew what part of the map was important to me and I could take the time to make sure that bit was right.

I did find a problem the other day. Not all the maps are scanned to exactly the same scale. In the FoD there was one map that was marginally different to all the surrounding maps. As I was doing old style cut and paste to create a custom paper map it was a bit awkward.

To get around that problem I stitch adjoining sheets using Microsoft Publisher. The maps can be stretched - by skillful trial and error - to get them to match up.

Another little problem is that some maps are scanned very slightly crooked. To join up the 2 sheets for Coed-y-Parc and Penrhyn quarry (6") they need to be rotated by 0.2 and 0.6 degrees resp. Photoshop does that very well.

These are very minor concerns as the NLS maps are a hugely beneficial resource.
