Hey! Briefly mentioned this on another post. I went through A levels a few years ago, there is now something available called an extended project, which wasn't around two years ago. So, can be anything, my plan being to write about the structure of a Welsh slate mine, how it was worked, the geology, including veins of slate, faults/areas of weakness etc.
I'm mostly into the vertical chambered mines, I feel weirdly spiritually awakened by the size and beauty of them. Writing a project, to be posted online about Aberllefenni, using old pics probably isnt a good idea knowing how sensitive the place is now. So maybe Abercorris or some other vertical chambered mine.
Either that or the untopping work at Blaenau. Again, sensitive places, but a project on how the Foty pit is basically sliding in on itself would be interesting, and perhaps help people understand what's actually happening there is fascinating geolotical terms. Anyhow, I could really do with some help on this, not nearly as aquainted with Welsh slate mines as many people on here. Btw, I used to be LAP on this site

Cheers

Why not Minllyn?

Big vertical chambers and not sensitive

If you haven't already got any of Alun Richards books about the Welsh Slate Industry, you should get them, they may help you.

You will get location and a general look of the place from this site.
There is a boiler in there and a pump rod going down into clear water. The chambers soar up vertically for what, about 80 feet?

Pick dry weather (OK, I know) for your visit as the entrance fills up to near the roof in wet weather, dry weather you will get in in walking boots. There is a waterfall in wet weather that actually comes down into the entrance, nicer to look at than to go through.

I will probably buy those books, thanks 🙂 This website is of course a great resource but I think I need to actually study the Blaenau area, and other areas, in more detail. Else I'll need a teacher to help me understand all the veins, faults, areas of working and floor numbers.

If I don't end up writing about Minllyn then that's ok, having learnt more about it it sounds worthy of visiting anyway.

Has Abercorris got 300ft high chambers? I've been into the really big ones near Aberllefenni many years ago

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
