I'm going to take the plunge and get one of the all in one electronic survey gismo's. There are a number on the market, but only one makes use of a laser distometer as well.

Has anyone ever come across this one or any of the others before?

On another note, this system uses a Leica Disto A3 which is modified so that it will display the bearing and incline, all saved to memory, that can later be downloaded.

There a a few on Ebay at the moment, but if anyone happens to have one...... let me know.

I've used a Leica Disto, in conjunction with a separate clinometer ( or sometimes one of those digital spirit levels ), for pipeline setting out for several years. They work very well.

I'd be curious to see how this works out.

The disto x sounds an amazing bit of kit. If you do go down that route could you let us know how you get on with it.

Just had a reply back about the conversion kit - no longer doing it due to obsolete parts, downer. But the guy is working on an updated one.

However, I have asked about details on the parts to see what is missing - no details yet. I did look all of them up and it looks like it might only be the bluetooth connection chip, if that is the case then it might still be a goer, as that can be over come.

Will keep you updated.

I found the missing part and was going to get it from Germany, but then the guy who makes the kits, emailed me saying he had found another PCB which is working - bingo.

Got the Leica Disto of Ebay, just waiting for it, and then need to fit the upgrade kit.

The survey system also supports a little application running on a PDA, that plots your readings from the disto on the screen and allows you to make notes etc...

So I suppose I will be needing one of these as well. Does someone out there have a working redundant PDA which is running Microsoft .Net Compact Framework that they would be willing to donate????? 😉

Its not a simple case of Leica Disto and PDA, the Leica Disto I have just got will be converted to take a bearing and incline reading, which is stored and transmitted to a PDA.

The kit is no longer available, I managed to get the last one, and only works on the A3 model.

Have a look on the link at the start of the thread if you haven't yet. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick with your question?

Not one spare I'm afraid, using a HTC Touch Pro 2 at the moment and most of my Windows smartphones have failed in one way or another (generally put down to a failure to sprout wings and fly). The .Net compact framework I've usually found to be pretty flakey though.

Yeah I can see that Mr Mike, So why has he stopped making it? Leica actually do a Bluetooth Disto with directional elements now, be interesting to see if that could work with the software.

The chipset that he used for getting the compass and incline readings (the big feature was that you could do it in any direction - you did not have to keep it flat to get bearing) are obsolete now and not available, also the A3 disto is hard to come by as its discontinued. I believe he is working on modding another Disto with new chipset.

I'ved looked at the Distos and can only find the D8 that has a 360Deg tilt, non of them seem to have bearing? Do you know which one does a bearing as well?

I would imagine that since you need the electronics for the incline reading to make the bearing electronics work well, there is no point in modding a disto with tilt, and you might as well use a cheap model.

If you can get a disto that give bearing, incline then I would imagine it would be relatively simple to get the data into the little app.

Great, all my mine explorer friends in our club would like one. Do I get a discount if I order 5?

Will they still work in the conditions of an abandoned mine? Neck deep water, lots of mud, are they falling rock proof - say massing 50kg?
