Found this on the net, as you do, thought it was quite a nifty idea and an interesting way of doing it.

Hmm. Interesting idea... Might be a bit hazardous if you try and light it immediately after you put on the lid as the gas coming out may be a mix of acetylene and air between the LEL and UEL so could go bang!

Carbide generators rely on back pressure to regulate the flow of water so that excess pressure does not build up - this doesn't have one and acetylene under pressure explodes. That's why acetylene cylinders have the gas dissolved in acetone under only moderate pressure and plants handling acetylene have blowoff valves set to a few atmospheres pressure to avoid disaster.

Doesn't that look like a bit of copper tube ?
If you pass acetylene through copper you get Copper Acetylide formed which is a contact high explosive.- Not a good idea to accidentally make your own detonators!

I assume there is water already in the container, though it does not show this, a pressure release valve would also be advisable, having been a victim of the notorious 'exploding ammo can', I respect Acetylene a lot more than this guy !!!---:o

Thanks for that Andy, so what where the transfer pipes in the famous 'Stinky' made out of?

I still have my Oxy-Acet gear and lots of copper pipe, could I make some dets? could I make them electric?

Please don't try it! The stuff is totally unstable.

But instead of carbide lamps you could try something safer, vegetable power! You will need a few in series to make a white LED work.
