So, the girlfriend is liking coming exploring with me and I need to get her a decent torch of her own that she can use.

I personally use a 1600lm chinese jobby, with a petzl myo rxp as a back up. I have to say both are brilliant lamps and have never let me down. 3 of us use the chinese ones, they are bright and give a good throw of light and last for a decent amount of time with some decent batteries in them. It has never let me down and definitely won't be too upset if it breaks at 30quid a time.

Now I bought the mrs a petzl zoom but the light output just isn't quite good enough, but it has the nice big battery box and is fairly simple and robust.

Now I've found these online and wondered if anyone had used them?

They seem like a good idea, 8hrs burn on 250lm output.

No idea other than the Duo ones are really good so presumably the same applies. Realistically it would struggle not to be an improvement; Zooms aren't meant to be sufficiently bright to be any use in total darkness whereas these are...

I don't think you'll have any problems with Biff's (Custom Duo) drop-in modules for the Zoom or the Duo. He makes good kit.

If you want to upgrade an Oldham headset I'd definitely recommend Mr Mike's Retro XP:

That's rjv and simonrl, yes I have heard good things about the duos, just not much about the mooz's,

Would mr mikes retro xp fit a zoom too? If it does I'd be tempted to keep the soom for me and the mrs can have the rxp 😉

Thanks, can someone also recommend some batteries for this? As the zoom batteries are square jobbies with tags on and are a wanky size and non rechargeable!

Would definitely like a way of some high a/h batteries for it too!

My mate uses a Zoom for fishing and it wasn't quite bright enough to walk back to the car on a cold wet night. He upgraded to the mooZ and was amazed at the increased output and the quality of the light. Great for walking back to the car but it's now too bright for fishing!!
I have a CustomDuo upgrade set in my Duo and the build quality is top notch. They will never fry bats, but at those prices they are unbeatable :thumbup:

Petzl do a battery-pack insert for about a fiver that allows AA batteries to be used instead of the big flat one. Obviously then recheargeables can be used, but they only run at 1.25 instead of 1.5, so you end up with 3.75, which is considerably dimmer than three fresh Duracells. The big flat ones are heavy, but in mitigation, they do last for ages.

I'm still considering upgrading my old Zoom with one of these to use as a back-up light as they do seem the business. I've already got an LED in it that I got from Biff ages ago at HE, but that's just a screw-in bulb replacement and is nowhere near as bright as these new ones.

Sorry I don't quite get you, rechargeables run at 1.25a/h and the flat one runs at 1.5?

The a/h shouldn't contribute to how "bright' the light is, just how long it will last. 3.75a/h will run 3.75amps for 1hr, or 1.87amps for 2hrs and so on so forth 🙂

So by my maths on high power you are looking at 5hrs give or take light from 3 rechargeable aa batteries.

What is the ah of the flat ones?

The Duracell 4.5V flat cell is 5400mAh

That's 1.25V not Ah so the voltage is less good. OK if you could fit one of MrMikes boards in . I've got one not quite fitted into an Oldham so I'll put it next to the Zoom I also happen to have lying around to see if it will fit...

Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

Ah I get you 🙂 yeah so if I can I'm looking at a square type cell that can be recharged. Hmmm...

So even on one square type battery you are looking at 7hrs run. That isn't avtually that bad. Although I'd like more if possible like always! And ideally rechargeable because at 4.50 a pop it isn't a cheap thing to buy!

No idea if it will fit into a zoom, sorry, but looks like gNick should be able to tell you soon.

If its the same design retro (Oldham) I got recently from Mr Mike, It won't fit in the zoom, I tried it just out of curiosity.

Okay then tahnk you for your help everyone!

The next step then is to decide on a battery set up, as I don't want to keep spending out on the square ones!

Hi, as mentioned earlier an insert ( poss caving supplies Buxton?) will let you use uniross AA re chargable cells. tried other brands and swear by uniross ( screwfix stock em, )

Not following this battery thing, Both of my Zooms (old) are back of helmet battery boxes which take 3 size c's or you can lift up the inserts inside to persuade them to take 3 AA's, am I being old and confused or what?
Rubber clip sealed lids suggest they will be suitable for all but the wettest of trips.
Am I wrong??

Yours is like mine...the better design in my opinion. Belt or helmet mount, you can take up the slack in the cable by winding it around the grooves in the battery box. 99.99999% waterproof in my experience. The older type has a "flattish" 4.5v battery similar to old-fashioned doorbell batteries. Showing my age.... ::)

Thanks for that Sinker, I thought I was losing it!!, my second one came from a charity shop who could not work out what it was worth ---£2.00!! - and I had to bid them UP to that 🙂
