Never again be blinded by people peering at you with their lamps on full whack!

Very whizzy!

I'll look into building a feature like that into my next lamp... Much as I like their other kit, I'm not paying the prices for Petzl's lamps.

So to be fair its not that offensively priced. No mention of waterproof tho. Typical Petzl not looking into the uses of there lamps

It says it has an IP rating of 4 which covers splashing. The little symbol next to that seems to indicate that it is ok down to a depth of -30cm which doesn't tie in with the IP rating.

As to the reactive bit - that strikes me as nothing more than a gimmick and something to go wrong. Surely it is not beyond the wit of the average lamp user to move his or her hand lampwards and operate a switch.

And, I suspect, fairly easy to implement. I'm hoping, time allowing, to have something prototyped up in the next few weeks. It won't be swish, or efficient (No PWM) initially, but it will work as proof of concept, and I hope it can be retrofitted into existing homebuilt lamps once I get it sorted.

Should I manage this, I'll publish Schematics etc under a suitable "free for personal use" license.

I've had an itch to build my own driver for a while, and this feature seems to round out what I had in mind nicely.

The reactive feature is more for ramping the light up and down when it's needed... mountain biking through a forest on a moderate light, emerge into clearning instant ramp up. That kind of thing.

I think it's quite trick, but then I like gadetry :)

I wasn't really advocating it as the next big thing in caving lights. But I imagine - as the technology inevitably becomes smaller and cheaper - a fair few OE instructors would welcome a lamp that kids can wear which flicks down through the power levels when they look up at the instructor. Getting full beam in your eyes all day from groups can't be a lot of fun!

I must admit I am something of a luddite - I had to be brought kicking and screaming into the 21st century as far as lighting was concerned. Left to my own devices I would probably be using a burning stick.

Self confessed gadget feak me  If truth be told I only really sell lighting kit so I can have a steady supply of samples myself!
