Following on from the other thread about a Sten battery, I thought it would be worth mentioning some storage guidelines for Li Ion.

Li Ion doesn't particularly like being stored fully charged, this isn't particular to Sten batteries (there is a pair of normal 18650s inside the sealed pack) but is common to all Li Ion.

Optimum storage for a Li Ion battery is < 15 degrees C stored at 40% charge. How you judge 40% charge is anybody's guess, but if I know I'm not going to use a battery for a while I'll charge it for about half the time it takes to charge it fully.

And, regardless of your make and model of lamp, if you've got two battery packs, it's a very good idea to cycle their usage.

woulod it be best to cycle it? Discharge it and recharge?
''the stopes soared beyond the range of our caplamps' - David Bick...... How times change .... oh, I don't know, I've still got a lamp like that.

No really, because that's what happens in usage. This is just for periods of storage.

I thought that I had better come in with a comment.
Li Ions like being stored discharged even less.
Protection circuitry will prevent discharge to less than 2.7V per cell, assuming that other people’s batteries have this!
So logically, putting hem away at this state could cause them to become totally useless in the event that they discharge further.

Edit: a further thought.
Not having technical data on Stens I cant say whether protection circuitry in built into the headset and charger rather than the battery pack. Any proper charger will have this anyway, the issue is with the battery packs.
You see it is common for people to use Sten batteries with other lamps.
See where I am coming from?

Fair point Roy, I only mentioned long term storage fully charged because it's more common for people to do that than to long term store them fully discharged. It's the 'backup battery that when plugged in doesn't work' syndrome.

Best thing to do is to alternate batteries IMHO. That and neither store fully charged or discharged.
