Bit of old news, but anyway it may be of use to someone. This is from a recall notice from Phillips LumiLeds, issued in January:

Quote:

We have identified an issue with certain LUXEON Rebel (with TFFC) and LUXEON K2 with TFFC LEDs manufactured from WW0744 to WW0802. As a result, we are initiating this Return Request Action. This request does not impact production of all of the LUXEON Rebel and LUXEON K2 emitters; only the parts identified below are affected.

Situation:
We have identified a batch of non-conforming epoxy material used in the production of LUXEON Rebel (with TFFC) and LUXEON K2 with TFFC products manufactured from WW0744 to WW0802. This non-conforming epoxy material has the potential to cause the TFFC die to crack and fail during short-term operation. We have seen a failure rate that exceeds our specifications and, subject to the provisions of Philips Lumileds Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale or any executed sales agreement, are taking the necessary steps to resolve this issue.

Containment:
Philips Lumileds has temporarily suspended production of LUXEON Rebel (with TFFC) and LUXEON K2 with TFFC emitters. This production hold will remain in place until we have resolved the issue.

Affected emitters include:

70lm LUXEON Rebel Cool-White emitter
80lm LUXEON Rebel Cool-White emitter
90lm LUXEON Rebel Cool-White emitter
100lm LUXEON Rebel Cool-White emitter
70lm LUXEON Rebel Neutral-White emitter
80lm LUXEON Rebel Neutral-White emitter
100lm LUXEON Rebel Neutral-White emitter
plus similar emitters in Green and Blue

160lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Cool-White emitter
180lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Cool-White emitter
200lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Cool-White emitter
220lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Cool-White emitter
140lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Neutral-White emitter
160lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Neutral-White emitter
180lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Neutral-White emitter
120lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Warm-White emitter
140lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Warm-White emitter
160lm LUXEON K2 with TFFC Warm-White emitter

Quote:

Preliminary failure rate data suggests failure rates of 10-30%. The reliability of the affected products that survive the first 24 hours is under investigation. A follow-up notification will be issued as results become available.

From what I can find, the Rebel 80 is now available again, but the Rebel 100 is still rather elusive.

I've got a Fenix P3D with the Rebel 100 in which has been great so far - the colour of the light is perfect for photography and lacks the slight blue tint that I've seen from some Cree Fenixes.

Having done a wee bit of a search, it seems I'm not alone in thinking that the Rebel 100 has a good colour output, but it's not much use if you can't get the emitters!

IIRC wasn't that the 5W K2? The emitters in the original 5W cybalite were rated at something like 1,000 hours with later batches at 10,000 hours.

Quite probably - I think the K2 was 'the' emitter to be labelled 5W in the progression from 1W to 3W and onwards, then we've not really seen emitters classified by power, eg the Luxeon Rebel, Seoul P4 and Cree Q5 etc.

I suspect that it something's labelled "5W" then it's a Luxeon 5W, (and probably the K2) rather than a Cree etc.

Does anyone know what the number attached to the Rebels is, by the way? I wonder if a Rebel 80 is an 8W etc.?

Rambling further off-topic, the next thing we should see is Cree R4s and R5s, being the same sort of jump as the P4 was to the Q5 - albeit not before the end of the year. And indeed, a couple of surprises from Fenix, but those will have to wait for another day 😉

I've had a peek at the datasheets for a few Luxeon emitters and I'm pretty stumped!

All I can come up with is that the Rebel is much, much smaller than the K2 'family'!

The Silva LX is marketed as being a '5W headlamp' (quite what that measures I don't know) and that it almost certainly has a a Luxeon K2 emitter in, hence I suspect Barney's is also a K2. This would, I suspect, explain why he has a broker torch and also why I'm waiting for a replacement LX to arrive from Silva...

the number is the lumen output at 350 ma iirc
so a 100 is more efficient than an 80 and hence better and rarer.
Any news on the rebel sten ??

Welcome back Mr Penguin, how's the thesis? Rebel Sten is held up due to the Rebel supply problems, what supplies of high grade Rebels that are around are being snapped up by the big manufacturers.

I've just had two shiney new tripods back from Hama in replacement of two that broke. Good service, but it'd have been nice if they lasted more than a day each!

Nice one Simon!..but what did you do to the poor tripods before they broke? We know what you do to cameras!
