It will never reach that level of popularity though.

Theres not a single passage in the whole 6.8km that's wide enough to swing your burning wire-wool in.

Not unless you're really into setting your trousers on fire in a confined space.

Ahh, you've noticed that trend too!!
The management thanks you for your co operation.

Well after a bit of break for other projects the survey is now pretty much complete apart from a couple of tiny loose ends in dodgy ground.

Over 7km, 18 trips and hardly a place to stand up straight at any point.

I've offered to take a small group in as an NMRS trip in the summer, i'm billing it as very much a 'connoisseurs' trip as its 100% crawling in shale passage with virtually no artifacts.

Oooh! That's selling it to us.

Thanks for all the updates though. I'd like to echo other folks thoughts on this forum - I never thought jet mining was ever that extensive.

Chris do reckon that the place was worked by kids?
Or do you think they kept it small & low, simply to save money?

I don't believe it was worked by children, census returns suggest adults.

The passages were driven at the bottom of the shale initially and were of slightly more generous proportions.

As they worked up though the shale band they just pulled the roof down and didn't need to remove the spoil.

So what we see left is the very top of the passages, forming a narrower arch.

Amazing stuff! May I ask how you've been doing the survey? Looks like some fancy digital stuff going on there.

I thought we had more or less knocked all the BIG jet mines on the head a couple of years ago.

And I was just tying up a few loose ends before considering writing it all up.

How wrong I was !

A recently opened up hole was explored and 750m covered on the first day, next trip another 750m with no ground yet repeated and the Northern limit not yet found.

Plus, we haven't even started to survey what to the South yet yet :o

Excellent stuff, great find!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
