Hi...

Come Wednesday..

We're off on a whisltestop tour to visit some of the UKs mineral bounty sites(Northern Edition). Criteria are: We're after archealogical remains, and spoil heaps to fossick about in, and some casual underground poking.

Got Shap Wells Hotel and somewhere in Darington booked. So the skeleton plan day to day is:
*Seathwaite for graphite, possibly pencil museum, maybe copper/lead options
*Have a gander at some lovely Shap granite. Wander across Alston direction, possibly museum, somewhere with flourite on the tips
*East Yorkshire Coast. Done iron mines, so maybe jet or alum?

Any help to flesh this out would be appreciated.

Thanks, Robin

Not sure about East Yorkshire but if you don't mind spending a tenner, Along the Scar by Dennis Goldring will show you where the majority of Alum, Jet, Iron etc workings are along the North Yorkshire coast and give some provide a level of geological background. :)

The most impressive alum workings in easy reach of Darlington are probably Loftus and Boulby. Coastal jet workings are small and sporadic but a quick search in the AN database should link you to a few.

North Yorkshire is where you need to be for those.

Boulby and Loftus as already mentioned probably have the most physical remains of cisterns and liquor tunnels.

Between and Sandsend also have huge Alum quarries just by the side of Cleveland Way.

Have a root around on here :-https://www.teeswildlife.org/what-we-do/past-projects/alum-alchemy-and-ammonites/places-to-visit/

Theres also a lot of stuff down at beach level in those area, but you need to be very careful of the tides, or you'll be making the local news in an RNLI rescue.

Access to shore level is often via very steep fishermens tracks with old ropes/firehoses.

Brill. Thanks for links. Shall assimilate tomorrow. Might be a bit wet, but it is August.

Cheers,

Graphite (Seathwaite) done. Fluorite (Rotherhope and Boltsburn) done + bonus Kelhope visit + bonus weasel killing a rabbit and dragging it into it's burrow. Jet tomorrow, so Whitby. If the weather is crap, chippy, then look at the goths looking miserable in the rain.

If you find yourself killing time in Whitby check out the excellent museum. It's a proper old fashioned cabinet of curiosities, complete with a "hand of glory", narwhal tusks displayed in billiard cue racks and icthyasaurs built into the walls.

Love the 'Prognosticator'. Couldn't believe it when I first saw it!:o

Totally under-prepared for Yorkshire coast day. Got the 'Along the Scar' book, so that'll need a week next excursion. Saw no Goths either.

A couple of months early for the main blossoming :)
