Howdy,

I'm planning a weekend trip to visit Moel Fferna and I'm looking for some locals advice on what else to aim for in the area. I've done Pennarth and Hendre Spar in the past and I'm now scanning the site records here (and elsewhere) for other targets of opportunity.

Our party is small and we all SRT but one is rusty and doesn't fancy anything freehanging so handlineable / SRT assist is probably the limit.

I've noticed Cambrian looks good, but can someone tell me how much is above the diver's playground bit?

Hoping someone can help.

There's a bit to see at Cambrian. Worth a visit seeing as you are in the area.

Have you been to Moel Fferna before? The SRT is a free hang when you get off the tree going down. around 15' to the top of the ladder

Moel fferna is a free hand and quite awkward to rig around the tree. Getting back up can be quite difficult too due to the awkwardness of the tree position. Last time we went, we set up a two ropes pulley system, pulled the least capable up first from the bottom then last most able man pulls himself up.

Plenty along the A5 to look at, moel fferna is a bit of a buggar to drive within a nice walking range, we tend to park around the back on the gravel road, rather than off the A5.

Agreed.

This is the way to rig it:

Follow the rope off to the RHS of the photo and there is a steel peg useful as a backup.

I use an electron when I go to Moel Fferna. Does the job alright and not too heavy to lug up the mountain.

worst things ever, do you go up them sideways? :surrender: I remember my first visit was via electron, we'd underestimated how long we would be underground, by the time we got to the shaft to exit it was like 6 hours later and energy levels were way too low, I was hanging off the ladder with my chin at one point because the arms were blown out, thank god for cowstails  worst 25 feet of my life hahaha

Electron ladders are the devils work, cavers like to fool themselves into thinking they're "well 'ard" by using them.

That's a bit unfair not everybody is SRT competent and has had the right training . A combination of rope and ladder works well at Moel Fferna as the free hang can be be awkward, especially if your centre of gravity means you are not able to to sit/ stand . Its somewhat arrogant to berate less experienced people and deprive them of visiting one of the classic slate mines in that area

Erm…. I think he was berating himself there...? Telling us he is a useless idiot who can only tie his laces. Not having a go at anyone else...? That's how I read it. :flowers:

Loads to see at Cambrian. No SRT needed.

Can someone confirm if the total drop is about 30ft? My mate has hurt his back so can't SRT, but wondering if he can electron it?
Thanks

My ladders 30ft and there plenty left. It drops down 20-25ft onto a rock shelf where there is a solid ladder for the next 10ft or so to the base.

It's the only reason I bought the ladder and the only place I used it bar once in Croesor.

Electron will be fine.

In fact....anyone remember when Barry (aka Moocher) free-climbed it out because he was bored waiting for someone on the ladder?!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll pack an electron to help the non climber although I too think they are the work of the devil.
