I've been contacted by a friend who wants to try his hand at producing a 3d drone survey - sounds like he's recently acquired the technology to do such a thing.

Really he was looking for some sort of building in the Cambs/London area but I wonder if anyone had any projects going around old mine buildings where this might be useful. Sounds like he may be willing to travel to the Peak perhaps.

My first thought was somewhere like Magpie but I imagine public accessibility might be an issue.

I've no idea what sort of result you'd get, all a bit vague at the moment but might be of interest?

I imagine a water-tower would fit the bill.

If you have some sort of official access and able to gain permission we could perhaps discuss by PM.

They advise me they have some insurance.

Sadly, I just picked the locations from an internet search, I've no official contacts.
Perhaps with a bit of 'phoning around official permission would be granted?

Well i had been thinking about the very same when I start my new job in the next couple of months.

But if in the summer they still want some practice and can travel to the North East, get back to me.

I can't see there being too much trouble about doing something at Magpie - drop the Luffs an email.

Thanks All - I'll check with the Luffs initially as I think this may be the best bet.

I'm not sure at this stage he'd be mad keen to travel to the North East but who knows, Magpie may whet his interest sufficiently to tempt him further!

Lots to go at on the site i'm thinking of.

Two shafts to fly down too, if you don't mind risking a few grand of kit plunging to the depths forever.

I suspect that may be a point of concern ;D

On a similar theme has the ROV survey of the flooded workings at Ecton been done yet?

Bear in mind that some areas may require a CAA license to fly a drone around. We engaged a company I regularly do work with to fly a drone over our project, which is on National Trust land - and they are extremely tight about such matters - they required all the paperwork and licensing up-front, but as they had an interest in the results, permission was eventually granted. We were able to calculate the volume of our crater to a high degree of accuracy, but that was using an onboard LIDAR scanner:

Thanks Phil

I confess I have no knowledge of the rules surrounding this - it's not really my bag.

We've had people fly drones round Magpie before, the main issue to be mindful of is the high-voltage power line crossing the site!

The rules can be relatively simple:
Landowner permission required for take-off and landing.
Don't fly closer than 50m to people and property "not under your control".
Max height 120m.
Max distance 500m away from the operator.
Maintain visual line of sight.
Daylight only.
Appropriate weather.
Observe any flight restrictions that apply to the area (airports, power stations, etc.)
CAA permission required for all commercial work.

Apart from those, it's all about showing that you can complete the flight without risking injury or damage to people or property. So a written site assessment with a diagram (eg. Google Earth) showing footpaths or anything of concern is a good idea. Include relevant phone numbers (hospital, police, CAA, nearest air traffic control) to call if it heads off over the horizon.
And be competent to fly in that location.

Thanks

Sounds much like common sense, if it happens it won't be 'commercial' in any case.

I was involved with surveying a historic (i.e., derelict) chimney in Baku a couple of years ago, using a drone, photogrammetry and external laser scanning. Worked extremely well.

There was a provisional plan to fly the drone inside the chimney, but that didn't happen - lowered the scanner down the chimney on a crane rope instead. Produced a lot of data but it wasn't usable, because the scanner rotated (as suspended loads tend to do) and the data couldn't be interpreted, despite a lot of manipulation

..... And kites, I've flown there a few times. Currently waiting for better weather to do an aerial 360, I've recently invested in a LG360 Cam. I've made the 3 axis gimbal rig and tried it out on the ground with the 360 cam and it looks good.

This is the proving flight for gimbal/video using an SJCam 5000

As soon as conditions are right I'll get 360 camera up.

Peter.

Awful weather and rushed the video but has potential.

I know you guys are after more prostuff but contract to get the rig up with the kite.

Peter.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
