This has been around for many years.

I remember when it first started no-one knew about it and they would happily send you a DVD full of plans for free.

Then they realised they could earn some cash and started charging something silly like £20 a plan.

It would now appear they have made many of the plans freely available to browse. Not sure how many are done but Nenthead/Swaledale area of interest to me have plenty available.

Ah Chris, I forgot that they had this - a year or so back I noticed that some scans were available.

Incidentally, the cost last time I ordered some plans (prob 2-3 years ago) was £3.00 a scan, with a min order value of £30.00 + VAT. However at the time you could not get to see the scan so sometimes you ended up with bum plans.

they freed up a lot of previously confidential plans, still some of the most sought after are kept under lock and key however.

Still trying in vain to get a copy of the silvertongues mine plan/section.

On a related note, does anyone know the best method of obtaining coal mine plans? directly through website or in person?

I've had a great deal of help and co-operation over the years from the BGS, a lot of what they have listed as 'confidential' I've gotten copies of after giving them a good justification for wanting to see them. Seems that Edinburgh are often more forthcoming and amenable than keyworth, so I suppose the storage locations have a bearing on what they will divulge

FWIW there's a mooview script that will rip the online version to a complete jp2 file as well for the freely available ones

I noticed a load of the Chatsworth plans of Derbyshire mines are marked as confidential, but I know you can view them in the archives there - I suspect what it actually means in many cases is that the BGS need to get the owner's permission before providing you with a copy, rather than "top secret"!

Best not discussed on an open forum, people tend to plug that sort of hole when it become public knowledge.

right click on the scanned images on the BGS site it gives you the link to the original script they use from sourceforge, so not really a secret!

Of course the plans are now in supersized image scan tiles, which can be downloaded and re-assembled in to massive jpeg images and then printed off using a drawing print service for about £7 a drawing with no minimum order.

But trust me it takes about two weeks per scan to re-assemble the tiles as there about 2500 tiles per image scan.

Oh if you want to do it use Firefox and a plugin called Pick & Save Images, open a plan zoom right in then use the app, it will then grab all the tiles visible for that area of the plan, it's then a matter of manually re-assembling the tiles in Photoshop.
