been gifted a petzl duo atex and the batteries are shot on it wondering would the AA battery pack fit for this or was the design changed to suit ATEX regs. will not be using it in a ATEX situation more likely to be used on fishing trips and stick with my oldham so that is not an issue regards to underground use

No sorry you need the black/grey battery pack for the ATEX model. It has different splines in the casting to ensure that "non-intrinsically-safe" battery packs cannot be used. For obvious reasons....Boom!
If you don't want to use it in an ATEX rated area then snip the battery box off and fit a yellow "standard" box on in its place. Buy a scrap torch off eBay and pinch the battery box. Or cut open the black/grey pack you have, ditch the dead cells and fit some 18650 cells into it. 3 will fit, just ;)

legend cheers that makes more sense now will look at finding the ordinary battery box and fitting that. Given its just for trips fishing and the odd trip in non flame safety lamp mines having atex is a bit pointless at 45 quid a battery

Might be worth just stumping up the £45 for the new battery? Last time I bought one they were twice that! Will last you for years.
