Interesting that Cameron can't stomach nationalising the steel industry whereas Ted Heath did just that with Rolls Royce in 1971.

Mr Heath was faced with the prospect of the RAF being grounded, at a time when the Cold War was in full swing. At least we're not facing any aggressive behaviour from east of the Urals now...............erm........:(

That's the nub isn't it. What's considered by the government to be strategic. Trident - yes, steel - no, coal - no, unconventional gas - yes - but that presumably is more to do with selling licences and fobbing the public off by saying it's strategic.

It will stay the same. After all those French and German companies are making a tidy profit from us. Why should they do anything to change that?

As for the government bailing out a failing British industry? It did that with our car industry and it still failed.

I hope that somehow our steel industry can be saved, but I don't know how.

I've avoided commenting on this as I believed we had agreed that this forum would stay away from politics. However I can't read what the Fresh Prince and others say without saying that Brussels has for several months been trying to impose tariffs on dumped Chinese steel imported into the EU. It's Britain that has used its veto to block. I expect it has something to do with keeping said Chinese sweet so they finance a nuclear power station.
I'll pop off and weave some yoghurt now. 🙂

It is the same old story, every time an industry reaches the end of it's life.
However, when one industry goes, another can replace it. For the better.

A few rather intemperate comments about the EU does little or nothing to help people who may find their futures less certain.

On a purely personal level of experience of the EU (EEC as it was at the time) I managed (by luck than anything resembling knowledge) to get enough ESCC employment funding to keep Beckermet open for an additional 6 months in 1974, not much, but they did and do provide a lot of regional funding. I would point out much has now to be matched funding which some UK governments have been reluctant to apply for, as appears to be the case with emergency flood aid.

So I would suggest those who rail against the EU and/or think it will be sun-lit uplands only if the UK (or maybe UKr) set off on their own do at least find out what they are actually against first:)

Many years ago I worked at a company that made the green string for dentists' drills. I remember the early days, when the gate was picketed by peddlers and quacks from the local fair, who were furious that a way had been found to fill teeth, rather than pull them out. Of course, the green string business is now long-gone. I believe that the building is still accessible; folk explore it and take pictures.
We tried picketing the turbine air drill maker, to no avail, as it turned out that patients preferred the new technology. Truth be told, so did I. Turns out that the choices they and I made had an effect. And the same is true here. We've all been happy to have cheaper shizzle. Let's not be surprised that the genie we've helped to create and which we've encouraged by spending our money, is now out of the bottle. Painting a picture of some EU-bogeyman (and I'm with Tamarmole, unbelievably crass IMHO) ignores our complicity. End of rant. Let's get back to mining or metallurgy at least. He said. 🙂

You seem to have missed the point by a country mile.

I couldn't give a s*** about people's politics, we are all entitled to our own views - personally I think Cameron and his lackeys should be strung up by the balls for what they are doing to this country. That is neither here nor there. AN is not the right place to be waving flags of whatever colour.

What F**ks me off is people making jokes about bombing Belgium. That is crass. The people who died (big word - think about it) in the recent bombings were innocent people who were murdered(another big word) to satisfy some tossers ego trip. I know. It was a poor analogy. Just attempting to inject a bit of humour into the rancour. I'm tempted to say "don't get me started on Trident", but am afraid that doing so might act in the fashion of Steve Irwin's stick with some of our members and we've had quite enough of that for one morning. :o
