Just had an email:
Hi came across your pages whilst looking for answers to a puzzle me and my partner came across to day .We live just up the road from Port Quin North Cornwall and often go walking up to Doyden Castle where there are two mine shafts one close to the cliff edge and one some way back .this was a Galena mine and i have found a few quarts Christal's in the spoil around the head .To day when we looked over to the shaft back from the cliff steam was rising and when we got close we could smell sulfur in the air .we could also hear the sound of rushing water none of which we have ever experienced before. this shaft is quite deep as it takes a good few seconds for a stone to reach the bottom (my stepson loves the sound and thinks there might be a dragon down there) .I believe it links up with the Adit that comes out in the cave at Port Quin .Do you have any idea what was going on down there to day and have you ever explored this Mine or the one back down the Vally at Port quin .Burt and Helen

Anyone got any ideas what might be happening?

G'day Skippy, Some time ago (mid-1970s) I and a few others went down one of the shafts on electron ladders. At the bottom it opens into a big sea cave, so hearing water rushing around is understandable. There's also a short drive which presumably connects to the other shaft but that was blocked by fill. I've also been in the adit off the beach at Port Quin. It goes for some distance and roughly in the right direction but doesn't appear to connect to the shafts. Someone else may have more up to date info ? It's listed on here as Gilson's Cove I think. Cheers
