I see what you mean Roy. I have looked at this for quite a while, I think that the answer is that the chimney is free standing and that the different angle of the shot creates an optical illusion. If you look at the plug door the damage is identical, also because of the daylight visible would indicate that the wing wall nearest the railway line has collapsed and also the rear wall. This would have taken the chimney with it had it been part of the house.

The tonal quality doesn't help too much in these old pics. The Contrast / brightness levels are very close giving the image more of a grey and white tone and thus losing the element of perspective.
As for age, I also believe the second image to be the newer of the two. The top of the bob wall looks like it's crumbling and the joints in the masonry 'blowing'.
Fascinating images both of them, I must put the first one up in the album. I should have a copy without the vignetting.

Further to the above posts here is the problem which has lead to the misidentification of this mine. see main photo and then enlargement of the bottom RH corner.
The caption reads 'Carnon Valley'
Comparison of the engine house window arrangements show an obvious difference.
