Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that over the weekend Old-Maps.co.uk seems to have turned off the enhanced zoom feature(s) ? It was there on Friday, but now it's not. It's still referred to in all the help files.

Any ideas ?

Agree - it disappeared on Friday of last week - thought it was a fault on my mac, but clearly not. Have you asked "old maps"?

No, not asked them - initially thought it was some side effect of a recent Microsoft update - but it doesn't look like it is....

I'm surprised they havn't put up some sort of notice on their site if it's deliberate, but under their own terms and conditions they do say they can change facilities etc. without notice.

Let's hope it comes back - otherwise it's like it used to be peeping through a keyhole!

Same here, it disappeared between two different vintages of Park Mill Colliery down at Clayton West - I've been using it so much that I probably wore it out :devil:

The site says that it is powered by OS etc... does anyone know if OS offer the same maps and version, but on a free basis, just like their current stuff?

Yes, I lost it as well. You can get a slightly bigger version by right clicking on the page and changing zoom level to 200% or 400% but it's nowhere near as good as the built in zoom. Hope it's only temporary. If they're encouraging you to buy maps, how the heck are you meant to see what you're buying?

Disaster...Don't they know I have maps to copy :curse:

Although I can not interperate the script, if you look in the page source, the enhanced zoom is mentioned several times. Hope it comes back soon, I'm on that site every day :confused:

I can't help but wonder whether their servers have been getting overloaded, there have been several occasions of late when it's been really slow. We really could do with enhanced zoom back though!

I've emailed them to ask about it (as if I was a first time user), the only other thing (long shot) is that I have not updated my flash player yet (been pestering me to do it) and since it is flash driven wonder if that might have something to do with it?

EZ is still detailed in their FAQ's.

Rang them up, Bummer, they have taken it off, apparently a permanent thing. Had a moan about the lack of detail now, and the fact that I cannot see what I want to buy - "will pass it on to my colleague"

On a mac, you can use Grab and then save the image. Not as good as the zoom, but usable.

This is getting like Googlebooks - which you can't download as a pdf anymore - and which you are expected to have to pay someone for a printed copy of something which wasn't even scanned properly in the first place - especially the folded plates! Grrr :curse:

I know this is off the thread, but I accidentally found myself on the French website for google books and found that I could download a pdf of the book for free. On the english website - it was a pay job. (Gabriel Jars)

Not everyone has an A2 or A1 printer to reproduce them on - unless you like to sticky tape the bits!

There's still a valid market for maps as artwork etc.

If Alan Godfrey can produce his (slightly reduced) 25" OS sheets for currently £2.50 each, I don't see why old-maps can't. AG's reproductions are actually better than the screen versions as they include the margins and havn't been trimmed to "Seamlessly" tile.

Oh well, another useful resource gone!

Too true - although you tend to lose quite a bit of fine resolution, and creating a map of a larger area at a decent scale is a helluvalot of cropping cutting, pasting and merging - not to mention correcting sheet boundaries and vintages to get a decent fit.

IMHO - they should be a free digital resource for research purposes (which covers most of us on AN - I don't think many of us actually hang them on our front room walls)

BTW: the National Library of Scotland has a pretty good map site too:

Quite a lot of non-Scottish maps as well.
