Hi I'm hoping somebody out there can help me, maybe even bchsd himself. I am trying to source an old map of the Wigan area on to which I can superimpose some mine names. This will be used commercially, so I expect to have to pay for it. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Look at (Google) Godfrey's Map Shop which has reprinted maps of the area from the Old OS 25" County Series as well as the first series of 1inch.

Cheers

The map is the territory - especially in chain scale.

Hi Grahai

Thanks for your swift response. I have already spoken with someone at Godfreys and unfortunately the scale of the maps isn't right and we are not allowed to use enough area of the map to cover what we need - they only allow usage of 10% of the area of any of their maps.

Cheers

http://www.centremapslive.co.uk/page/home  their 'groundsure' maps can give you a selection of historical maps centred on a location. You'll probably want to talk to them first however to make sure it's what you're after, i'm not entirely sure if you can order just one map, or whether you'd have to get a selection from them.
PM me if you have any problems and i'll send you a contact name and number there.

I think www.old-maps.co.uk might be a better option, depending on your wants.

Thanks for this. We've looked at old-maps but I'm finding that Centremaps is working better for us....at the moment.

There's Cassini Maps at www.cassinimaps.co.uk. They have a huge range of dates and scales.

http://maps.nls.uk/os/25k-gb-1937-61/browse2.html
Their range is (apaprently) the whole of the series, not just Scotland as oen might imagine. Some of these are out of OS copyright but the NLS need to be asked for permission to reproduce them in publications.

Thanks for this Penrhynman. We will try this and if it works make a choice between this and Centremaps.

I think we can now close this issue.

Many thanks to all of you who have contributed.
