Thanks dylrobs, this is exactly what's needed before anybody gets too carried away!

Please take care though, if it's off the bridge (either fallen or removed (although I still maintain it'd take a basket case (and a very strong basket case at that)) to remove one) then there's a chance the bridge may be weakened.

If I recollect correctly there were similar hangers in the rubbish at the bottom of the air shaft. I think there was at one time another bridge here since the first chamber you walk through after landing is back filled so all may not be lost.

Whilst theives are not the brightest lights you would have to be particularly dim to remove hangers from a bridge that you were actually standing on.

Yes, i've seen his photos from the weekend elsewhere and the bridge looks unchanged.

7 chains on each side.

I don't think its come off the bridge.

Well this is one of Boboils pics of the bridge from earlier that day and it looks as tho the tensioners havent been touched

However it could be worth going and checking

Lesser of two evils I guess.

More likely to fall through the gap in the middle when not tied to anything than have all 14 bolts in the roof all go.

Sorry for the late reply. The first thing we did was to go down to see if the bridge was still standing, it looked to be unchanged and i don't think that the tensioner was removed from there. Looking at the condition of it i would definitely say that it was removed from inside the quarry and not carried up from the dressing mill area.

All the other 'must see's' are where they should be.

It's a relief to know the bridge is unchanged.

Why on earth anybody would go to the effort of hauling a worthless piece of rusty iron up the shaft is beyond me.

Maybe there's an increasing argument for making access to places as difficult and uncomfortable as possible - I don't mean causing damage, I mean not leaving bolt hangers or any fixed aids, and not digging places out but leaving them full of neck deep muddy water :devil:

I'd respectfully suggest that dragging about 50kg of ironwork to the surface probably wasn't done for the purposes of having a proper look at it! 😉

Whether it was removed with the intention of weighing it in; or because it might look nice hanging from a wall I wouldn't like to speculate - but I'd be staggered if it was lifted up the shaft for the purposes of industrial archaeology... :confused:
