It would appear that the Duke of Bridgewater was not the only one to have a canal/mine link.

Recent work by the Chesterfield Canal Trust's restoration workers have re-discovered the entrance to a canal tunnel link to Westwood mine. Some 2 miles long!

Interesting article and video. I remember some years ago poking around this site to see if the Hollingwood Moor Tunnel was still accessible, but the area was so overgrown and marshy that it was an impossible task. Good to see that it was still there after all.

A few south Wales collieries had canals that went underground. Nantymwyn Lead Mine had a canal that went underground.

Underground canals were not exceptionally rare but the Duke of Bridgewater's underground canal system was specailly noteworthy because it was unusually extensive.

They are a number of coal mine canal tunnels around Derbys / Notts and prior to this they were a number of boat levels.

Last time I went to look for Hollingwood Common Canal Tunnel all I found was this possible pipe for any water and the rest of the area was overgrown. I've also seen some drawings which show most of the tunnel being silted up.
