Tungsten ores are sold and priced in "tonne units" or 100'ths of a tonne. Tungsten concentrates must exceed 65% WO3 and current uses prefer scheelite (for the APT - Ammonium paratungstate process to tungsten metal) to the wolframite series (huebnerite-ferberite) normally used as a direct steel making additive.

Current market for a tonne unit of tungsten concentrate is around US$300 - somewhat higher than when Carrock worked in the 1970's when a tonne unit was around US$25 !! Carrock still contains a significant inferred resource below the No. 2 Level although no drilling has been completed to confirm this potential.

This issue that closed Carrock under Minworth was the lack of area for a tailings management facility and that problem would still remain, but suprising nobody has thought of exploratory drilling yet!?!

Very Interesting , thanks for the information , I do remember the tails dam was a bit cramped !!!.
A very interesting mine, and the only tungsten deposit outside of Devon and Cornwall as far as I am aware !! :smartass:

Hi Peregrine here
I will photograph the next time I go
does anybody know who actually owns the mine?. It is gated and shut but when I went the gate was not locked as such. There are photos of the gate it must have been fitted for about 3yrs. There are at least two other adits and a surface stope (shaft) to enable entry
I worked at carrock for 2weeks salvaging about 23 yrs ago, I have a friend down here in Burnley who owns a coal mine wanted to buy a crusher from Carrock and that was my involvement
Ladder from Waterfall Vein on to Emerson Vein cross cut

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
