As far as I know C.A.T. Have gated the Canadian level on Harding vein with permission of the landowner and presumably the Lake District planning board.
No doubt access will be allowed under "controlled" conditions.
I think they intend to do some underground clearance but the latest journal does not make this clear.

The following is an extract from the CAT meets list.

19th February CARROCK. Meet at the Mine. Warren Allison (01228 523923) will have the key for the gate so we can drive up to the entrance. This will be to view the recent work that CATMHS has done to reopen the entrance and to go underground on the Harding level. It will be many years since people may have been in the mine and the air quality should be much better with opening the entrance up again. An opportunity to get some good photographs. Grade E.

I have added a few pictures taken a few days ago at the entrance of Carrock Mine.

We failed to get in as it seems we needed a 12-14mm hex. socket / allen key to open the gate and not the gear we had brought.

The mine looks like its ready to start working again - a very nice bit of work by the boys.

Nice job.

Reminds me of the 1st time I saw the place (except there were lights on way back then)

Hopefully the silt level will start to lower itself a little now the water flows freely.

It looks like access requires a 12-14mm hex. socket / allen key that will open latch on the gate. The gate on the road to the mine has a heavy duty padlock keeping the bar closed and the road blocked.

However plenty of parkiing at the head of the valley is available and only requires a short walk to the mine.

glad I read this post as I was thinking about paying a visit having not been there for sometime!

is it just entrance works that have been done? or has work been put in place to reduce the water level beyond the partial collapse (as I recall it was nigh on chest height about 12 month ago when I was there).

are access arrangements to be put in place? because that gates looking one hell of a lot easier than making sure the stones and Iron bar were replaced almost precisely

looks like a fairly extensive bit of work!

as I recall, my list visit involved a conversation with one of the wardens who was out and about, said that there had been some extensive issues of unauthorised mineral extraction...... is this the reason for the secure access??

The key to the gate referred to is the gate further down the track not to the level.

COMRU practices here at least once a year, the "other " ways in are still open, there has always been a "spouting" hole in the fines dam (air quality in this dead end can be questionable), the water beyond the fall is not all that deep - you'll get your legs wet!
