I thinking of buying a GPS unit for suface surveying and am looking at the Garmin e trex H. Has anyone got any experience with this bit of kit? I would be especially interested to know how it performs under tree cover (given that I want to use it in the Tamar Valley this is fairly fundamental).

depends what you want to do with it.

I have the predecessor to the GPG62 and use it for route assessments for pipelines and the like. It gives good results - repeatability typically within +/- 2metres. However I do find discrepancies between individual units of up to 5m on the same day, and there is no way to adjust this.

Of course, this is fine for walking etc but no real use for mapping.

I'd also feel that the levelling function is completely useless for such purposes. Again, it is quite sufficient for contouring along a hillside, but that's all

Tree cover is a real problem for my little yellow Garmin.
