Before I spend a load of time reading the manual (ha!) does anybody know if the breadcrumb trails on handheld gps units can be saved off and shared? And can they be shared between different makes of device or are they device specific?

A case of RTFM....

I know nothing about this kind of thing and im in the same boat at the moment! From what i understand, if you have a handheld unit the route you have walked can be down loaded onto a map (part of the software) then saved and shared as any other document. Is that what you mean???

Exactly that, but whether it can then be uploaded to other handheld devices, and other handheld devices of different make.

I was thinking of it as a resource, but for hobby use and more serious application.

Ages ago i e mailed these people for their free demo disc http://www.anquet.co.uk/  The website explains a lot of things so maybe the answer lies there. I seem to recall that once a route is uploaded to a pc, it can be downloaded to any device, depending on the software used.

I have a Garmin Etrex Vista which I take with me when I go walking. As long as it is switched on it will record my route, without prompting. I then download this to Memory Map ( My mapping software) and this shows my route on an OS map.
I can then save this route and upload it to other devices.
This should be a similar process for most GPS units.
Hope this helps.

Several people have suggested 'Memory map' is better than 'Anquet maps' (my above link)

As I understand it most GPS units create a log file which is your route consisting of time, location etc. It is basically a type of text/csv file in format. You can convert that to a gpx file which is fast becoming the file type to utilise in such applications like Google and the Ordnance survey's own API. This allows you through an XML file to load the gpx file and you see your track/waypoints/comments/photos etc displayed on the map.

The gpx file can be edited in a program editor or in Notepad

Does that help??

Found extra info which will explain better than my crap. Bob Osola has these pages

Very timely thread :)

I've just unpacked a new GPS - very basic, but so small that it can be wrist-mounted. Pics later 🙂

I bought the MemoryMap 1:50000 map of Wales not long ago. It's very good, very useful and although I don't use GPS, I think it will do what is being discussed.
One note of caution is that MemoryMap shows Public Rights of Way through Penrhyn Quarry that closed years ago. Other PROW's are also suspect....but this, I suspect, is Gwynedd County Council's fault for non-notification (as with the street name changes etc etc) There are some very "iffy" databases out there as a result!

I think Garmin use a different file type to everyone else. Cant find my manual and my Garmin Vista is so shot it won't even turn on!.

Memorymap is a very good programme. Expensive but a damn good resource.
