Is it true that the headgear on North Roskear has been demolished this week due to its state as per an article in todays Western Morning News?

its gone just been over to have a look and its not there any more just the shaft covers!

I wonder what they are going to do with the site. Isn't Roskear a vent shaft? Clearly it has been done for a proper reason, as Crofty aren't the sort of people just to have a tidy up, looking at their yard.

Decision to demolish taken "purely on safety grounds.

crofty dont owen the land at roskear it did belong to david giddings but i think its been sold for houses?

How much influence have people like the 28 Days Later crowd's antics had on this?

The site belongs to Brownfield Investments, which is poart of Wheal Jane Group. The fans have been moved to Crofty for reinstallation onto Robinsons shaft and it it the intention that the the winders will be used as underground winches at Crofty.

Roskear shaft is to be used as adit access and downcast ventilation, so fans are not required. Other upcast shafts will include Trevenson engine, Taylors, Williams, New Cooks and in the future Simms.

Whats the situation with Trevenson Engine shaft?
Was it not capped recently?

Remember a bit of fuss in the press at the time.

It is planned to remove the cap, install a vent duct to surface and build a fan house, housing a 100-150kW fan. Apparently this has been agreed with the Homes and Community Agency who own the land.

my employer at Combe Down have been fishing for design work at South Crofty for quite some time, did they have any input?

I have no idea what design work has been done yet. reading the Environmental statement for the increased mining area there are a large number of shafts planned to have their permanent caps removed , some cases they are having lockable manhole covers installed, others vent grilles and others vent drifts. Simms is down to have at least a vent grille installed.

I had a feeling this would happen soon. Did they actually totally cut it up and scrap it or did they take it appart and store it away? Would be a shame for it to be scrapped completely and not get some re-use out of it.

Glad to hear that Simms shaft will be re-used again soon, shows how big the operations are going to be underground once things really kick off too.

With regards to New Cooks Kitchen shaft being used as an upcast vent shaft, does that mean the larger part of the headframe may be comming down at a later date for health and saftey reasons?

I would be very surprised if there was a need to remove any part of the headframe, it was always a downcast shaft so it is not airlocked and the fans are installed underground. The plan for the future included potentially using NCK to hoist ore between levels, due to the fact that with decline access to go from 1000m to surface would require a 6km haul distance, with that kind of haul distance vertical hoisting is more cost effective.

could you just clarify a point.... are we talking Simms as in Pendarves?
Thats a good o'l hike from Crofty but with tin like I've seen from the Tryphena lode, I would not be surprised.
I suppose a drive from Crofty through Dolcoath, Stray Park and all stations to Pendarves would be a reasonably simple task and take in some unexplored sections of ground too.

Pendarves was always one of those locations that looked as though it should have been good, but never really justified itself and closed when it was no longer able to attract investment.

There certainly WAS product there, and presumably still is; but profits, not so much.

I would be sorry to see it go, but on the other hand I doubt if the new South Crofty venture would have much enthusiasm for spending money on it unless it was going to be used.

a new, 21st century winding tower, raising between levels underground at a revived South Crofty would be a fine thing, but I'd say that's far too far away to be worth serious discussion

the cooks headframe is a iconic landmark for cornish mining i would hate to see it go sounds daft but when i come back on my rotation i know im home when i see it on the sky line i know sentamental old git :lol: :lol:
