Hello folks.
I'm a new member and this is my first post,
Would just like to say what a gem of a site this is!!

I have lived in and around the Newmill area of Holmfirth all my life so I'm familiar with the local attractions e.g Sally wood mine.
I have recently been trying to track down the less well known mines (of which there are many), quite a lot of info to be found and even a rough map or two published by local history groups, but there seems to be many forgotten mines in the area, scrambling down a local wood to find the source of a spring I found a rough shaft dug horizontally into the hillside going for at least 20 meters before veering of to one side.
Looks like it hasn't been visited for many years (pics to follow) and I can find no info on any mines in this particular area?

Any local members who may know of other forgotten shafts or know where I could find more info?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I had never heard of Holmfirth until your posting and I just Googled it to find out where it is!

The British Geological Survey volumes "Special Reports on the Mineral Resources of Great Britain" have all been digitalised and can be downloaded, a quick search should locate them.
Then its a case of going through them all for any reference to your area.

I cant immediately think of any other available resources.

Rooman, there are a few on here who have a general interest in that sort of area from I think Leeds and Cleckhuddersfax way (& possibly even Lancs...) who might pop up at some point. I used to live nearby but had different interests then so can't help at all.

(I've trimmed the other post btw to keep things tidy.)

I'm surprised there isn't more to be found on my area, within 2 miles of my house there is everything from small private day shafts to large scale mining operations. The mines of Jackson bridge and their orange water outlet are fairly well documented but just yards away is a forgotten open shaft.
Very interesting area.

Nothing mind blowing but plenty of variety and a heavily mined area.

"A history of mining in the new mill valley"
Is a great little reference book by the local historical society if you can find a copy online. Really did their homework.
A few (rough) maps included too.

There is a new book out which covers some of the mining round the Holme Valley. Check with Holmfirth or New Mill library. One of the authors is on this site so might get in touch. He specialises on the Tinkers and Hepworth Iron Mines.

The West face of the Holme Valley is riddled with old mine from Kings Bridge, Newsome, Berry Brow, Honley, Brockholes, Thurstonland, New Mill, Jackson Bridge right up to Hazlehead.
I would be interested to know of the open addit you talk about.
Roy I would like to throw some light onto the Holmfirth Area which is an Area of Kirklees. There is more mining round this area than Barnsley and Wakefield put together. we have most outcrops. 'Compo' would turn over in his grave.

'Orange Water' suggests iron, the coal measures are West and East of Holmfirth, any idea of what they were after?, try the spoil tips for clues.?

I have had a look at the spoil from the shaft seems to be mostly a slate like material but I'm not really sure what im looking for.
The next nearest shaft I know of is jackson bridge, about 500 meters away.

Hi. The ochre water at Jackson Bridge comes from the 'Meal Hill Mines' (Coal Authority name). Iron stone has been worked in this area, Check, ''Hepworth Iron Company'' at Hazlehead, now under different names. They did the 'Hepsleve'' plain ended clay drainage pipes, Plus various other Hep' products.
There are old Ironstone mines shown on plans above 'Woods Pit' going up to Tinkers Monument. In the area where 'Compo' and mates spent a lot of time.

The Coal Authority monitor this site and some of the mines round this area have gas problems. Sally Wood Is one of them, but this has collapsed now not far in so should not be entered.

Good point.
Due to the location and condition of the site I doubt many people know it exists. Though the shaft itself looks very intact as far in as I can see.

Welcome I've a workmate who lives in the New Mill area I'll ask him next time I see him and ask him what he knows
