Hi

Can anyone help.

I am a member of UCET and off to the lake district this weekend with a group of friends, we are staying near Coniston does any one know of any "safe" mine I could take a small group of newbies in ? They just want to do a couple of hour on Sunday.

Any Ideas would be gratefully received.

Thanks

John.

You can have a look in Deep Level (no SRT), Hospital Level (there are a few shafts to cross to get in deeper, so a SRT harness and cowtails are needed for the safety lines).

There are a a few short surface crosscuts that give access to very deep shafts.

Also some short old workings, such as Cobblers and I think Gods Blessing, which is right up the fell.

Best bet would be to get hold of Eric Hollands book "Coniston Copper Mines: A Field Guide", pronto by the end of the week!

The Mosshead Slate mines might be worth a thought, lots of old kit both outside and inside; winches, cabelways, blondins, wagons etc..., All walkable and rails in-situ to follow throughout-only difficult bit is scaling the Old Man to get to them!

Otherwise, slightly further afield, Carrock is a superb little mine, very photogenic...but wet (crotch-deep in places)

I was up there last week - the climb isn't too bad as long as you park up beyond the Youth Hostel ;)

Carrock is most excellent, not too far away. I don't recall getting particularly wet in there, but I am quite tall!

Is there an entry for the Mosshead slate mines on AN then? Can't find one myself, perhaps it goes by another name?

I'll be up there in a few weeks and will take a look.

There is: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Old-Man-Slate-Mine/  (listed as Old Man, but also searchable as Moss Head).

Carrock is here: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Carrock-Wolframite-Mine/  and that really is a cracking trip, well worth it, was one of my highlights for 2009
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

There on under Old Man.
Personally I'd say they were a far better choice if you're just out for a wander on a Sunday afternoon.

Yup, that's my view-lots to see but not too challenging or hardcore for those newbies...

If you want more details on the different levels/directions and general info etc Johno-pm me 🙂

Thanks for all the feedback, I think we will go with the old man slate mine, Carrock looks good but in the wrong direction for us.

Thanks again, I may even get some decent pictures to post on my return

John.

We'll be staying at the Coppermine Cottages the first week of August and will probably be able to devote a little time to a potter up to these slate mines, probably myself, young Summer (12) and Georgina (13) if anyone fancies an easy wallk in trip with us.

I'm in the Lakes for a week as of the 4th August. Not certain I'll be at Coniston but I will be dragging my brother-in-law into a couple walk-in mines at some point. Feel free to give us a shout if you can slip away for an afternoon.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
