Hello,

We are a group of Belgian speleo's who wants to make a trip to some abandoned mines in the lake district (for about 4 days) in november 2010. Since we are not familiar with mining overthere... Can anyone give us some information about which mines we can visit overthere without ropework. We are also still searching for accomodation to stay. We prefer a clubhouse of somekind above a hotel. Can anyone give us some tips?
thanks,

Kris

You can start with Coniston.

Plenty of walk in copper mine levels and also slate mines on the Old Man.

You can stay at the Coppermines Youth Hostel.

The Nenthead area is also top but not strictly in the lake District (about 30 miles away).
The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time.

Carrock and Force Crag are both worth a look too.

Have you considered Nenthead, about 40km from the north Lakes - more mines than you can probably explore in a life time, lots of long deep walk ins.

Bunkhouse in the village.

Smallcleugh, Rampgill, Capelcleugh, Brownley Hill, Haggs, Middlecleugh
All within about a mile of each other.

Have a look at Mr Mikes website for an idea of the vast number of trips that are possible.

I must have been at least 20 trips there in the last year and still have a vast amount to see.

Kris, if you brought over some nice Belgium Beers 😉 I would be more than happy to show you around, I'm sure others would as well, we could have a mini Euro mine festival.

Always happy to show you round mines in the Lakes especially Coniston. Can even help you with a night's accommodation.

This sounds great, and I'd be really keen to come along, and to meet some overseas mine explorers. And drink some of that beer Mr Mike mentioned

Hi minerfan

How's the planning going? Are you still intending on coming over in November? There's a few people who would be happy to meet up I'm sure.

Yes... We are certain of our trip now. I have made contact with Mr. Mike for a visit in the Nenthead region. It would indeed be very nice if you come along and join us.

Resurrecting this thread, the Belgium's are coming over 11th Nov middayish and leaving on 14th.

Have we got any takers on helping showing them around Nenthead. They are not bringing wetsuits or SRT gear, so just walk ins / climbs / scrambles.

I will be able to do the Friday, and was wondering if any others could do a bit on Thurs and Sat?

My thoughts are that we should show them SC, RG and BH ? Coupled with maybe some surface stuff for interest, if they get sick of underground.
