I've been using this for about 15 months for planning walks etc.. its free 😉 , no joining and lets you plot your walk by satellite view and map takes account of gradients... I have used it to work out the time for the walking parts of field trips and its been basically spot on! http://www.walkjogrun.net/

EDIT... Well I thought it was good!

got to admit these tools allow me to do alot more... I did a recent Edinburgh trip and did my itenary based on Free OS downloads, Satellite Imagery, on line path/pic details of each site, some internet suggestions off here, and walking and drive times to and from sites on the web....
Net effect 13 sites in three days and able to go straight to them... Brilliant.... I got optimum use of daylight and time... a great trip.
I like technology like this though some say its taken all the fun out of it.... how I don't see... hours spent pondering where the hell on the wet OS map the feature seems to have gone only to find you are a mile off etc etc etc. Sometrips I spent longer in the car fannying around Cornish lanes.... Nope I don't miss it  ... Technology has not taken that feeling away of going off to find stuff just made it easier to do!
