I'm off to the inlaws down in Spalding for the Christmas period. I generally have a good walk boxing day, out in Norfolk or maybe the Lincolnshire Wolds. This year I was thinking about a walk to take in some of Northamptonshire's iron workings. Can anyone give me a pointer of somewhere interesting from a surface explore point of view to go. I've got access to os maps for planning a route, but was just wondering what area might be best.

Cheers,

Robin

If you want good surface stuff try Wakerley but a must see is Easton on the Hill. There is Thrapston (Very good), Cottesmore museum (prob closed but accessible) and quite afew bit in the Kettering area pit wise at Cranford. But a real Gem is Nettleton which I recently put on here with a plan. If you search on here for Iron with content you should get a reasonable selection as I have put most sites on with stuff to see.

If you want any particular maps from the ironstone books let me know. Worth a look around Buckminster too, there are eerie level crossings in middle of nowhere with track cut off either side! A good day can be had on the iron stone with a little planning!

The Country park at Irchester is a good walk as well.

Hi Robin,
Just thought I'd mention there's quite a bit of interesting information about the ironstone mining around here in East Carlton Park heritage centre near Corby (theres the bucket from one of the walking draglines outside and a fair bit inside).
Most of the recent workings have gone - they make rather convenient landfill sites. I'd suggest the dismantled railway at grid ref SP900 927 which was once quarried later to become the mineral line to the ironstone workings at Harringworth . Also of interest is the plens at Desborough (SP806 838 ) and Rothwell Gullet (SP808 818)
Hop this is of help.
Regards Andy

The line out north from Corby to Shotley & other pits is crossed many times by public footpath & in one place the footpath goes along it, also the under bridge were it crossed the lane to Harringworth is still there as is the infilled bridge in Fullen lane Gretton.

There a loading dock at the site of Harringworth sidings but this may be farm related.

A public foot path runs along part of the trackbed of the line from Corby to the ropeway site were it goes under Oakley viaduct & the line to cowthick pit is pretty intact.

Still alot to find and see around here.

I've got an unfinished GE overlay showing the ironstone lines around here if your interested.

Hi

Is it possible to have the GE overlay.
I am visiting Corby this weekend and it would be great to have a look.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
