Thought I'd just bang a couple of links on to my vids of the trip for those with a passing interest in rail... I'm working on the M9 Diesel Electrics 🙂 .

The M9 Prima looks like a Class 67 but on Co Co bogies... it has a monster Ruston 3200HP 12RK215 engine derated to 1800HP with AC/AC drive controlled by 2 computers... therein lies the issue!! Nothing that can't be sorted as when they run well they are wonderful bits of kit.. tremendous ability to deliver the power via those AC motors and small wheels!

Gauge is 5'6" but sadly the axle load is the killer as it's only 18.5T thus precluding use of heavy axle load vehicles with real high horse power!

What you need is a big hammer.

My day job involves keeping a small fleet of aged 2 foot gauge Wingroves running. In much the same way that Sherlock Holmes measured the complexity of a case in the number of pipes it would require we measure the complexity of any railway job in the number of hammers 🙂

(Definition of an engineer - a man with more than one hammer)

They work well... No big spanners required!
They have an AC alternator with AC traction control and AC power Distribution and AC motors. Big spanners and a hammer don't fit the bill!!! :lol: But I can wish... gimme steam anyday!!! 😉

Did you see the BBC news item entitled "Steam Train's snow rescue glory" on the 23rd December?

Apparently trains were suspended on the 21st December between Ashford and Dover when cold weather disabled the electric rail. However, about 100 lucky commuters were offered free seats on the Tornado trip from London to Dover and arrived home safely - thanks to Steam!

I have the 'On And Off The Rails' video, it shows them digging a steam loco out of a snowfrift.
Next move is they set fire to oil soaked cotton waste at various points to free off the bearings etc then tow it away.
I can just imagine the effect of setting fire to a modern diesel electric. :lol:
