Yup, we got turned around by the snowplough driver and scowled by a police Freelander.

Spent the rest of the day getting covered in aforementioned red gunk, and likely will spend the rest of the week cleaning it off

I was just thinking that today actually, I was hoping that they made it, having gone such a long way. I guess they were going to Nent from the west so hopefully it was better for them than us!

For the benefit of Colonel Mustard, 'washing machine' is the large white rectangular bit around the circle of mud

Washing machine?
Is that the thing where I dump all my gear in front of it and it magically appears later in the day clean and dry?
I thought they load themselves and do it all for you?

Maybe I should have paid more attention to the warnings before going for a drive today...

We drove from Westgate, up to Rookhope, then over to Allenheads with no real problems, after that we decided to try taking the road over the top to Nenthead, it got a little interesting in places...

It got deeper too...

We did actually make it though (and in time for a pint at The Miners too)

Lots of fun on the road into Nent today after the snowplough had helpfully given up and gone home halfway up the hill leaving a nice 6ft high bank of snow across the road....

We've not had as much as some places this time around 😮 but there's been enough to make it pretty :flowers:

Here's a panorama taken from the top of Big Low (quarry & mine) at Rainow on Sunday. http://www.kap.toadstone.com/360/biglowsnow1/  Big file so be patient.

Some more conventional photos here, including some great sunsets overlooking the Cheshire Plain, all taken in the last few days. http://www.kap.toadstone.com/biglow/photos/

Just done a snow check outside ........... oh dear the lanes full 😉 of snow & more to come they say.

Peter.

We've had some fantastic sunrises and sunsets here, last night was pretty good but unfortunately I was too busy trying to get home from Sheffield - I had to go in and get my laptop so I can work from home for the next few days!

I had a good walk on Sunday around Hubberdale - it was meant to be a PDMHS guided walk but since only John Barnatt braved the snow to come out there was no need to do the tour guide bit and instead I had a "more academic" discussion with John about the various features. All the ground features were showing up really well, we've got some excellent photos and I'll have to get round to posting some

I reckon you've had about 20 minutes since 5am when it's not been snowing 😉

Nice snow pics 🙂 I'm quite envious. A little bit has fallen in N Wales again (Blaenau area has more than here on the coast) but we never seem to get this much snow 😞 This is about the deepest I found over Christmas. Mind you, I'm not brave enough to drive through aa 6' drift!

Well we'd gone at the drift with shovels beforehand so it wasn't too bad in a Landrover.
The chap behind in a normal car probably wouldn't agree with that though having cleverly let his sat-nav guide him over Alston Moor as an alternative to the closed A66....

Fabulous article on the BBC:

Quote:

Visitors to the Snowdonia National Park are being urged to use "common sense" when parking their vehicles.

The warning came after motorists parked on the side of the road at Pen y Pass near Llanberis because the car park was inaccessible due to snow and ice.

Photographs show buses struggling to pass the parked cars.

A spokesman for the park said it was not policy to clear car parks when more snow was forecast and said drivers should park lower down the mountain.

"Because Pen y Pass is so high, when the weather forecast is like it is now, then there is no point in using resources to clear a car park with 81 spaces," said Peter Trumper, the head of property services in the park.

"There is a good chance that we would get a digger up there to clear it, but then when people got back down they could find snow half-way up their car doors," he added.

Mr Tumper said the advice would be to drivers to use car parks lower down the mountain and walk from there.

"Usually the snow does not stay for long, but that is different this year," he said.

"The public should take responsibility for themselves and not drive up to Pen y Pass (if conditions are bad) - and they should check our website for MountainSafe advice before starting out," he added.

Mr Trumper said park staff had been advised to turn back on Tuesday because the snow and ice made it extremely dangerous to reach Pen y Pass.

= please park 3 miles down the valley and walk up, then you'll have an extra 6 miles to add to your day!

Of course, if you do get to the top of Snowdon after your somewhat-longer-than-expected walk and require shelter from the elements, you'll find the nice new cafe (the one that only opened in mid-June this year) is shut for the winter... ::)

It’s pretty awful that the inconsiderate parking of those antisocial people who insist in using the car could impede the progress of the holy bus.
