I wa wondering if anyone has any info thay would like to share on Moel Tryfan as i was wodering if there was much underground work undertaken.i have found some adits but havent had chance to explore them so im not shore if thy were driven just to drane the open cast pit.

I'm not aware of any drainage adits. The quarry by my recollection was worked as 3 separate pits. Water levels in each lake are substantially below the collar and are similar to other pits in the area such as Twll Braich. Being of the typical Nantlle pit-working type, no actual underground working was undertaken, although there is what appears to be a trial adit at the south-west end possibly connecting to a collapsed shaft at a shallow depth.

I don't have my copy to hand, but there's a full (?) description of Moel Tryfan in "Cwm Gwyrfai, The Quarries of North Wales Narrow Gauge and The Welsh Highland Railways" by Gwynfor Pierce Jones and Alun John Richards.
(Still available e.g. from Moore books)

Also try Welsh Highland Railway Heritage group,led by John Keylock.`Cwm Gwyrfai...`is an exellent book on the quarries of this area,and well worth a look if intresed generally in slate quarrying (as is anything by Alan John Richards).Been a couple of walkers had accidents up there recently.Would like to know more myself as Moel Tryfan and Alexandra quarrys have an interesting history.Good luck.

There are several tunnels that were used for haulage, easy to identify as they are level and roofs are full of soot still from engines.
Had the pleasure of a trip round guided by Gwynfor a few years ago.

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

As well as the tunnel, presumably a trial, in SE corner of the pit there was another tunnel at a lower level. It went from one of the lower levels (possibly the main level???) heading from the flat (mills??) are heading E for some distance before turning through 90 degrees to head N and presumably into the pit. It is blocked someway N of the turn. There are traces of track having been in the tunnel, in particular, steel "gauge retention bars" on the sharp curve.

I was wondering what that was.thanks for pointing that out.allso i found a large oxigen bottle wich i presume was used with a oxy acetylene cuting torch to remove all the old rail for scrap

there is a tunnel going under the middle lake and goes through moel tryfan.it has been closed up on the rhosgadfan side and a filming company blasted the rocks above the lake for safety purposes,leaving masive boulders at the tunnel entrance nr the shore of far eastern lake.went through it many years ago.good tunnel with a ledge on one side.the local quarrymen used the tunnel as a shortcut to work.

Really? Roughly at which grid ref? I've walked across there several times and not seen anything obvious.
